Utilizing Campus Resources as a Grad Student

Think student services on campus are just for undergrads? Think again!

The fees you pay as a graduate student each semester allow you to use a variety of services on campus. Here’s a helpful guide to getting the most out of the services you pay for.

The Student Health Fee covers the costs of Counseling and Psychological services, diagnostic tests, procedures, medications, nutritional advice, and Health Education & Outreach.

The Health Center provides health services such as diagnostic testing, administering and prescribing antibiotic medications, medical equipment such as crutches, and over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, cold medicines, and more. They are also able to perform some procedures as well as administer some outpatient consultations, evaluations, and examinations.

The Student Health Center’s resources don’t stop there! Other services include:

Campus Safety is here for you, even on your worst days. We’ve all been there — you get back to your car after a long day only to find your keys locked in on your seat, or you find your battery dead on a bitter cold day. It happens! Luckily, University Police offers services to students on campus for those moments when you need help the most.

SUNY Plattsburgh’s University Police offer a variety of services, including: 24- hour Escort Services to individuals on campus, assistance with vehicle lock-outs, vehicle jump-start kits, and
educational programs for safety.

The Fitness Center, if you opt in for the $80 fee, can be accessed using your student ID card. The Fitness Center boasts a swimming pool, many forms of workout equipment, group exercise, and a rock climbing wall.

Graduate students lead busy lives, but there’s always time to get and stay involved on-campus and in the community! The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) provides opportunities for students to make meaningful impacts — and have a bit of fun — while earning their degree. The CSI Office helps to facilitate volunteering opportunities, getting involved with Greek life, and more.

The bulk of the Learning Center‘s offerings are geared toward undergraduate students, but don’t let that stop you from utilizing their writing tutoring, which offers proofreading, paper development, citing help, and more. The Center also offers STAR-NY, which is a remote tutoring service for students in the SUNY system from 7pm to midnight. That’s right! Online writing tutoring when you need it.

SUNY Plattsburgh boasts a large on-campus computer to student ratio. Even during midterms and finals week, computers on campus aren’t hard to come by. Campus computers have a variety of installed programs for student use, most of which are connected to printers. All students receive a “print quota” which allows them to print 500 pages from on-campus printers. Cloud printing allows you to print from your laptop to printers on campus.

The Career Development Center has a large amount of services for graduate students available to use. Their office is available for resume and cover letter help, offers job postings, personal career coaching, practice interviews, and much more.

The Career Development Center’s website, Cardinal Connect, boasts online resources any time of day. All current students have access to this website using their NetID and password.

Feinberg Library has many resources available for all students. In addition to having a variety of databases ready to help with research, the Library offers one-on-one research help from librarians, as well as their 24-hour “Chat with a Librarian” tool that allows you to access online research help when you need it. Online Library resources can be used even when you’re not on campus, too.

Graduate students also have access to the InterLibrary Loan program, where students can request materials from other libraries if Feinberg does not have it. This free program can be a lifesaver during research projects and is easy to use. As a special bonus for graduate students, a number of study carrels are available each semester that offer private quiet spaces. Registration in advance is recommended and carrels are limited.

As a graduate student at SUNY Plattsburgh, you’re entitled to all of the services offered to undergraduate students, plus a little more! Be sure to also keep an eye out for campus events, and check your email and our Facebook page for special graduate student events throughout the semester.
