The City of Plattsburgh and surrounding region has plenty to offer when it comes to recreation, dining, and shopping!
SUNY Plattsburgh is situated very close to the Adirondack Park, home to beautiful hiking and climbing trails, rivers and lakes, and plenty of gorgeous scenery. Lake Champlain offers year-round recreation along its beaches with swimming, fishing, and boating in summer, and ice sports and ice fishing in the winter. Local rivers and smaller lakes are the perfect spot for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Many local shops offer rentals for the day.

Champlain Centre Mall:
The Champlain Centre Mall is a few miles from the SUNY Plattsburgh campus, and has been recently renovated, with stores like Target, DSW, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and more. See a full list here.

A number of great opportunities for day trips or weekends away exist when you live in Plattsburgh.
Montreal, Canada, a vibrant and bustling city, is just over an hour north of Plattsburgh. It is full of historical sites, shopping, festivals, entertainment, and outdoor activities. The ability to read and speak in French is helpful in this multi-national city, but most residents speak English, as well. Click here for information about Montreal.
Burlington, Vermont is also about an hour away by car (via the Lake Champlain ferry). The city of Burlington has many historic landmarks, boutique and large retail stores, museums, and gorgeous scenery. Click here for more information about Burlington.
Albany, New York is about a two and a half hour drive from Plattsburgh. This large city is New York State’s capital and has gorgeous historical sites, an incredible shopping selection, and has horse racing nearby in Saratoga, NY. Click here for more information about Albany.
Lake George, New York is a town with a lot to do and is only an hour and a half away. Situated just twenty minutes away from Glens Falls which has hundreds of outlet stores, Lake George is home to the Great Escape, Six Flags amusement park. Lake Placid, New York, home of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games, is just an hour away from Plattsburgh. This small cosmopolitan city has excellent small businesses and outlets, high-end dining, and endless opportunities to explore the lake and mountains (in any season!).
